Alex Lowes interview with RST

 In News

This year Alex Lowes spearheads RST’s assault on the World Superbike crown. With the new rules for 2015 the Lincolnshire lad’s Crescent Suzuki is on a much more level playing field for the coming season.

The tie-up with Crescent is also a winning combination, as Crescent motorcycles are one of RST’s concept stores so not only can you see the RST collection there but you can also watch the Crescent team working on Alex’s bikes.

Now in his second season riding for Crescent Suzuki, Alex is looking set for a storming year aboard his GSXR1000. He popped up to RST headquarters in Derbyshire to pick up his latest test suit ahead of last week’s testing in Portimao, and so RST took a few minutes to grab him for a chat about the coming year…

RST: FIRST OF ALEX, WELCOME TO THE RST FAMILY!

“Thanks, it an exciting time ahead and I’m really pleased to be working with a British company so close to where I live. My test suit feels awesome; I can’t wait to get on the bike at Portimao for the first 2015 test.”

RST: WHAT DID YOU GET UP TO OVER THE WINTER?

“I was lucky another to spend some time over Christmas with my mate Freddie Sheene in Australia. The weather was so nice, I got loads of time on my pushbike (thanks for the RST cycling kit by the way – I looked like a pro!). I also got to hang out and do some moto-x and flat track riding with Troy Bayliss, Chris Vermulen, Gary McCoy, and Jason Crump. I got some time in the gym too, in-fact being in Oz with the warm weather you eat really healthily: you don’t really feel like tucking into a Mars bar when its 35 degrees! I’m now feeling in really good shape, we start testing in a couple of weeks so the timing was perfect.”

RST: SO HOW MUCH ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO YOUR FIRST 2015 TEST?

“I can’t wait. I got to ride the new 2015 bike for the first time last year and it was epic – I did my fastest ever lap round Jerez on it, and knowing that the team will have improved the GSXR1000 even more gives me real confidence for the season ahead.”

RST: WHAT ARE YOUR FEELINGS ON THE NEW WSBK RULES FOR 2015?

“I like the new rules, it’s going to make it a much tighter championship with everyone running similar power. Also the cost reduction means it’s better for the smaller teams and gives more young riders a chance to be seen on the world stage. The more bikes on the grid the better, and everyone loves close racing, including the riders! It’s also good for the Suzuki, the new rules suit us and with how good the 2015 bike felt I’m feeling really positive: bring on Phillip Island!”

RST: AS YOU KNOW, RST IS THE OFFICIAL SAFETY PARTNER FOR THE 2015 ISLE OF MAN TT, DO YOU SEE YOURSELF EVER RACING AT THE TT?

“I love the TT and have massive respect for all the guys that ride there, but no – basically my balls aren’t that big! I’ve never actually been to the TT but I’m really looking forward to coming over for the first time this year with RST.”

RST: FINALLY, WE KNOW THAT BEING BSB CHAMPION MUST BE THE HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR CAREER SO FAR, BUT WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE RACE?

“It has to be Cadwell Park 2013. It was a dream weekend. Being a Lincolnshire lad, Cadwell is my home round, and the support I got from the crowd that weekend was awesome. Everything went to plan: I set pole position, won the first race set the fastest lap and then won race two – a clean sweep at your home race is about as good as it gets!”
